Mayer was a highly-touted recruit coming out of high school and was ranked as one of the top tight ends in the country. He committed to Notre Dame and had an impressive freshman season in 2020, catching 42 passes for 450 yards and 2 touchdowns. He was named to the Freshman All-America First Team by the Football Writers Association of America and was also named to the All-ACC First Team.
