Liam O'Brien, born on July 29, 1994, is a Canadian professional ice hockey forward renowned for his role as an enforcer. Liam O'Brien, who originally comes from Cole Harbor, Nova Scotia, started learning to skate in his hometown and began playing organized hockey in Montreal. Over time, he moved to different places like Halifax, Wilcox, Sask., New Brunswick, and Toronto.

Liam's journey to the NHL happened quickly, going from being invited to rookie camp to becoming part of the NHL team. Even though he wasn't picked in two drafts, he signed a three-year contract with the Capitals in 2014 after impressing everyone in the preseason. O'Brien made his NHL debut on October 9, 2014, playing in his first NHL game against the Montreal Canadiens' Brandon Prust. On June 10, 2019, O'Brien extended his tenure with the Capitals, signing a one-year, two-way contract extension for his sixth season. However, he was waived by the Capitals on September 30, 2019, and loaned to the Hershey Bears the next day. After completing his sixth year with the Bears, O'Brien left the Capitals organization and, due to the COVID-19 pandemic's impact on the North American season, signed an AHL contract with the Colorado Eagles, the primary affiliate of the Colorado Avalanche, on November 27, 2020. In the 2020-21 season, he swiftly contributed to the Eagles, tallying 8 points in 12 games. O'Brien's performance earned him a one-year NHL contract with the Avalanche for the remainder of the campaign on March 30, 2021.

Making his debut for the Avalanche after more than three years, O'Brien played a crucial role in a 4-2 victory over the St. Louis Blues on April 2, 2021. He achieved his first multi-point game, recording a career-high 2 assists in a 4-3 victory over the Blues on April 14, 2021. Known for his physical play in a fourth-line role for Colorado, O'Brien concluded the regular season with 3 assists and 40 penalty minutes in 12 games. As a free agent, O'Brien inked a one-year, two-way contract with the Arizona Coyotes on July 28, 2021.
