Peter Laviolette Jr., is an American ice hockey coach and former player. At present, he serves as the head coach for the New York Rangers in the National Hockey League (NHL), the same team with which he made his NHL debut with and the only NHL team he ever played with in the NHL.
Laviolette's journey began in Franklin, Massachusetts, where he attended Franklin High School, participating in baseball and ice hockey. However, he continued his passion for hockey at Westfield State College in Massachusetts in the NCAA III league before transitioning to the professional ranks with the Indianapolis Checkers in the International Hockey League (IHL). Later on, he played in the American Hockey League (AHL) with franchises such as the Binghamton Rangers and Providence Bruins. Despite going undrafted in the NHL Entry Draft, he still played 12 games with Rangers in the NHL before jumping between the IHL and AHL during the latter stage of his playing career. Internationally, he proudly represented Team USA in numerous tournaments, including the Olympic Games.
Transitioning into coaching, Laviolette has held coaching positions with several NHL teams, including the New York Islanders, Carolina Hurricanes, Philadelphia Flyers, Nashville Predators, and Washington Capitals. His coaching highlights include leading the Hurricanes to a Stanley Cup victory in 2006 and guiding the Flyers and Predators to the Stanley Cup Finals in 2010 and 2017, respectively. Laviolette joined his present team, the Rangers in June 2023 and led them to the Presidents' Trophy in his first season there.
