Peter Laviolette Jr., an American ice hockey coach and former player, currently leads the New York Rangers in the National Hockey League (NHL). Born in 1964, Laviolette initially pursued a career as a defenseman, playing college hockey at Westfield State College. Despite not being drafted, he played with the Central Hockey League’s Indianapolis Checkers before earning a spot on the US National team for the 1987-88 Olympic season. Furthermore, he again made the US National team for the 1993-94 Olympic season.


Laviolette's NHL career included 12 games with the New York Rangers in 1988-89, but he primarily played in minor leagues such as the International Hockey League and the American Hockey League. Transitioning to coaching, Laviolette led the Carolina Hurricanes to a Stanley Cup victory in 2005-06. He also served as head coach for the New York Islanders and the Philadelphia Flyers, achieving accolades such as being named the all-time winningest American-born NHL coach in November 2008.
