Born on September 20, 1988, in Novokuznetask, Russian SFSR, Soviet Union, Bobrovsky began his career with the Metallurg Novokuznetask in the Russian Superleague (RSL). After spending four seasons there, he was signed to a three-year, entry-level contract with the Philadelphia Flyers on May 6, 2010. He soon became a starter after replacing the injured Michael Leighton on the roster and shared goaltending duties with Brian Boucher.
However, a dip in form and the Flyers signing Ilya Bryzgalov led to Bobrovsky getting traded to the Columbus Blue Jackets.
