Emoni James-Wayne Bates commonly known as Emoni Bates is a professional basketball player who plays for the NBA franchise the Cleveland Cavaliers. Born in January 2004, Bates played at the University of Memphis and Eastern Michigan University. Bates attended Lincoln High School in Michigan and in his freshman year was named Michigan Gatorade player of the year. In his sophomore year at high school, Bates averaged 32.3 points, almost nine rebounds, three assists, and 2.1 steals per game, and shooting 37% from the three-point land. After finishing his Junior year at Lincoln high-school Bates skipped his senior year and directly enrolled in the University of Memphis.
In his freshman year for the Memphis Tigers Bates averaged 9.7 points and 3.3 rebounds in 18 games before an injury setback. He then transferred to Eastern Michigan University for his sophomore year where he improved drastically from his freshman year and averaged 19.2 points per game earning All-MAC Third-team honors. After two college seasons, Bates declared for the 2023 NBA Draft, where he was selected 49th overall by the Cavs in the second round. He is currently on a two-way contract, splitting time between the NBA with the Cavaliers and in the G League with the Cleveland Charge.
