As a senior at the University of Virginia, McCarthy, alongside Beau Hossler and Bryson DeChambeau, led the United States to victory in the 2014 World Amateur Team Championship (Eisenhower Trophy). He was the only American to shoot in the 60s all four days and finished the match in fifth place overall.

After participating in the 2015 Walker Cup, McCarthy turned pro and joined the Web.com Tour in 2016. He played in 21 tournaments and secured seven top-25 finishes, including two top-10 finishes. However, he failed to maintain his ranking and returned to the Web.com Tour the following season. In 2017, he competed in nine tournaments, securing four top-10 results and finishing ninth overall. Eventually, he earned his PGA Tour card in the Web.com Tour Finals after finishing below the top 25 during the regular season.
