When the Chennai Super Kings tend to start a season slow, it doesn't often end well if recent years are anything to go by. It's a stark contrast to their slow starts in the initial years of the IPL before they would pick up a head of steam and make it to the knockouts. That is pretty much what they'd hope to rekindle having lost two on the bounce after an impressive win first up this time around.
There's been plenty of discourse surrounding the Super Kings and their squad construction, particularly from a batting standpoint. With a red-hot Delhi Capitals swinging into town, the hosts' challenges aren't going to ease out anytime soon. Not even at their fortress of Chepauk, where they were humbled by Royal Challengers Bengaluru a week ago.
To complicate matters further, there is an injury concern over skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad, who took a blow to his arm while batting in the team's last outing against the Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati. He did eventually bat for a duration of 16 overs and even notched up a pristine half-century where he did not seem in any evident discomfort. But he has been away from training this week and that has raised speculations over his availability.
Batting coach Michael Hussey remained optimistic of Gaikwad's presence for this game - something the Super Kings dearly need for he is their best batter more than anything else. But should he not be deemed fit, there's a chance that MS Dhoni could take over the reins again on a temporary basis.
Whether that is a wise call - if it so happens - or not is hard to say. Dhoni still remains the most astute captaincy option in the league but for a franchise still trying hard to come out of his shadows and move ahead, it may not be the best move particularly if it were to come with a lot of white noise once Gaikwad is back. Captain or not though, Dhoni's presence is bound to attract another sellout crowd at Chepauk as the home faithful look forward to seeing the five-time champions return to winning ways.
If that is to transpire though, their batting simply has to click better. Particularly in the powerplay, where CSK have comfortably been the least effective of all ten teams two weeks into the competition. There is a growing cry for Gaikwad to return up top with Rahul Tripathi looking like a fish out of water and Rachin Ravindra still coming to terms with the nature of the T20 beast. The possibility of Devon Conway coming back into the setup cannot be ruled out either although that could mean Jamie Overton is discarded after a lone game. It's very unlike CSK to chop and change this early in the tournament but this was a feature of the team last year too - a far cry from the times when Dhoni led the side and gave his players a long rope (even if overly long sometimes).
Shivam Dube hasn't gone big but has looked good with the bat. Against a quality spin attack that the Capitals have at their disposal, he could have a major say in how much CSK post while Ravindra Jadeja and Dhoni will have to be more effective than they have been so far. Should Conway come into the setup though, Tripathi or Vijay Shankar could be the one to make way while it would automatically call for the inclusion of an Indian seamer should Overton be left out.
That spot, you'd think, then goes to Anshul Kamboj who CSK went all out for at the auction. If reports are to be believed, the Haryana seamer had an extensive workout in the nets on the eve of the game and it could point towards him getting a go. This would mean the Super Kings compromise on their batting depth to an extent but Kamboj's inclusion will allow them a control bowler to partner Khaleel Ahmed in the powerplay. In turn, that could avoid the need to bowl Ravichandran Ashwin, who has been off-color so far, in that phase but the two big X-factors come in the form of Purple Cap holder Noor Ahmad and slinger Matheesha Pathirana, countering whom becomes even tougher should the new ball bowlers land early breakthroughs.
CSK's bowling is clearly its stronger suit at this point. But if a power-packed Delhi Capitals unit can blow them out of the water, it could just make life even more difficult for an under-fire batting lineup. More so with the Capitals arriving on the back of a drubbing of the Sunrisers Hyderabad and as one of two unbeaten teams in the competition thus far.
Of course, conquering Chepauk is not as easy as RCB made it look and very rarely do CSK lose two on the spin in their own backyard. But this is perhaps the best time DC could have asked for with regards to visiting Chennai and making a strong impression. Somebody who knows a thing or two about playing here is Faf du Plessis, who continues to pile up runs for fun. Jake Fraser-McGurk looked rusty against SRH but is a bona fide match-winner while KL Rahul, who has often saved his best for the Super Kings, showed a fair bit of aggression during his brief stay in the last game. He could be massive in countering the likes of Noor and Pathirana while Abishek Porel will be tasked with sustaining the momentum at number 3.
Tristan Stubbs, Axar and Ashutosh Sharma can tear into bowling attacks but if the deck plays on the slower side, adapting to the pace of it will be pivotal. Axar in particular could have a huge role to play given his prowess against spin while Vipraj Nigam could be the surprise package on the back of a breezy match-winning cameo against the Lucknow Super Giants last week, with his leg-spin also bound to be a handful at this venue.
Speaking of the bowling, Mitchell Starc has snared eight wickets already in two outings and will be looking to break the game open in the powerplay against a brittle-looking batting lineup. Mukesh Kumar hasn't hit his straps yet but Mohit Sharma's cutters could be the modus operandi for the rest of the seamers to follow at Chepauk. Whether local lad T Natarajan plays or not remains to be seen, but Kuldeep Yadav's four overs could once again have a decisive say in the contest, particularly given the kind of form he has shown.
So are we looking at the possibility of a visiting team starting as favorites at Chepauk? Gee whiz, when was the last time anyone said that! Now you never write the Chennai Super Kings off and despite concerns to tide over, they aren't a multiple-time title-winning team for no reason.
The Capitals will be well aware of that. But they will also know that this is the opportunity for them to cash in on and land a serious punch in CSK's own backyard. It's an afternoon start and while that takes dew out of the equation, the heat and humidity become a big factor. Coping with that will be critical to both teams' cause as they look to assert themselves on the tournament. Particularly for the Super Kings, lest the heat soon get to them instead!
