In his early life, Lewis was involved in street fights, which eventually led to a prison stint of nearly five years, though he was paroled after serving three and a half.

Lewis began his combat sports journey by training in boxing under the guidance of legendary boxer George Foreman. He was introduced to MMA by a friend and had a 4-1 amateur record. In 2010, he was signed by Bellator and later won his first world championship belt at Legacy FC. After achieving a 6-0 record in that promotion, he was signed by the UFC.
