Islam Ramazanovich Makhachev was born on October 27, 1991, in Makhachkala, Dagestan, Russia. He is a mixed martial artist and as of 2024, he is the reigning champion of the UFC’s lightweight division. Hailing from the village of Burshi, Makhachev grew up in a rural settlement where he started training in several martial arts since childhood and also met Khabib Nurmagomedov, training under the legendary late Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov.

Makhachev started his professional career in the MMA in the year 2010. He was signed by the UFC in 2014. He won the UFC lightweight belt in 2022 by submitting Charles Oliveira in the second round. Since then he has defended the title twice against Alexander Volkanovski and once against Dustin Poirier. Makhachev’s next fight is against Renato Moicano at UFC 311 on January 18, 2025. His record heading into UFC 311 is 26 wins and a single loss (26-1-0) via 5 knockouts, 12 submissions, and 9 decisions.

According to his Instagram post, Islam Makhachev has an older brother named Kurban Ismail Makhachev. Kurban has been a key figure in supporting Islam’s MMA career. According to reports, when Islam struggled financially during his early sambo career, Kurban took a second job to cover his travel expenses, enabling him to compete. While Kurban maintains a private life, he is often seen supporting Islam at fights and sharing moments on Instagram.

Islam Makhachev Parents

Though details about Islam Makhachev’s parents are limited, reports reveal that his father worked as a driver and grew tomatoes on the side, managing a personal greenhouse where Islam frequently helped. His mother was a homemaker who also ran a small café.

Islam Makhachev and his wife have a daughter. In an interview with Megan Olivi after winning the lightweight championship, Makhachev said that he keeps thinking about his daughter.
