Woodley grew up in Ferguson, Missouri and was the eleventh of thirteen children. His mother raised him after his father abandoned the family when he was young. He was a two-sport athlete in high school, playing in American football and amateur wrestling. In the 160lb weight class, Woodley won the Missouri 4A Men's State Championship in 2000.
Woodley attended the University of Missouri and entered the wrestling team after graduating from McCluer High School in 2000. He was a two-time All-American there, first in 2003 and then again in 2005. [nine] Woodley earned a bachelor's degree in Agricultural Economics from the university in 2005.
Woodley made his UFC debut in February 2013 with a KO win over Jay Hieron. Before that, he was at strikeforce and had an impressive record of 8-1 after which he was signed by the UFC to compete in the octagon. Later in his career, he fought and defeated Kelvin Gastelum, Carlos Condit, and Josh Koscheck. On July 30, 2016, he beat welterweight champion, Robbie Lawler, in the main event of UFC 201.
He won the UFC Welterweight Championship with a first-round KO and also won the award for Best Performance of the Night for his efforts. He successfully defended his title four times against Stephen Thompson, Darren Till, and Demian Maia. However, at UFC 235, he was unable to defeat Kamaru Usman and lost his belt.
