Florida-born quarterback Austin Reed started his college career at Southern Illinois. After a rough season, he transferred to West Florida where he led to the NCAA Division II national championship. Reed signed up for the NCAA transfer portal following the 2021 season, and in March 2022, he made his commitment to Western Kentucky. Reed has appeared in 26 games in two seasons for Western Kentucky.
In the 2018 recruiting class, Reed was not ranked when he graduated from St. Augustine (Florida) High School. His first contract was with Southern Illinois. However, he then moved to West Florida, where in 2019 he helped the Argonauts win a Division II national championship. He had 40 touchdowns and 4,084 yards passing. After inking a non-interim contract with a local company, Reed considered continuing at West Florida; nevertheless, he decided to test the transfer waters and ultimately chose Western Kentucky over BYU. Reed played for the Hilltoppers in 2022.
In college, Reed's ability to play fast-paced football was remarkable. In 2023, the Tops ran more than 70 plays a game; in 2022, they ran more than 75. Although it's uncommon for NFL teams to function at that speed, it's still nice to be ready for when it becomes necessary. Reed's strongest suit is undoubtedly his arm strength, as many other scouts and experts have pointed out.
