Cook was born on 10 August 1995, in Florida. The 28-year-old running back attended Miami Central High School, where he waited until his sophomore year to join the football team. Coached by Telly Lockette, he played as a running back as well as a defensive back. By his senior year, Cook had established himself as a capable running back, leading his team to the Class 6A championship with 223 rushing yards and four touchdowns against Seffner Armwood. For his performance and efforts throughout the season, the Florida Dairy Farmers Association honored him with the title of Mr. Florida Football. Additionally, he earned USA Today All-USA Football Team, 247Sports Second-Team-All-American and All-State Class 6A first-team.

Originally committing to playing college football at Clemson University, Cook later changed his decision to the University of Florida, before ultimately choosing to attend and continue playing football at Florida State. Concluding his college career with over 4000 rushing yards, he announced that he would opt out of his senior season to enter the 2017 NFL Draft.
