Charlie McAvoy Jr. is an American ice hockey defenseman and alternate captain for the Boston Bruins in the National Hockey League (NHL). He was drafted by the Boston Bruins as the 14th overall pick of the 2016 NHL Entry draft. McAvoy played minor ice hockey in the 2010 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament with the New York Rangers minor team and in August 2013 he committed to play college hockey at Boston University.

He gained valuable experience at the USA Hockey National Team Development Program in the USHL. During the 2015-16 NCAA men's ice hockey season he contributed to the team's success with future NHL player Matt Grzelcyk. In 2016, McAvoy was named as the top four defensemen available for the NHL Entry Draft. In the following year, he was selected as the 14th overall pick in the 2017 NHL Entry draft by the Boston Bruins.

Charlie McAvoy's Contract

The 25-year-old defenseman, Charlie McAvoy is set to earn a salary of $11,000,000 with a cap hit of $9,500,000 for the 2023-24 NHL season. He will make $3,250,000 in signing bonuses and $7,750,000 in base salary. Drafted in 2017, he has signed three contracts in his NHL career. The first contract he signed was a three-year contract with the Boston Bruins for $3,775,000 with a cap hit of $916,667. The three-year extension contract was worth $14,700,000 with a cap hit of $4,900,000. The third contract he signed was an eight-year contract, which he signed in 2023. It is worth $76,000,000 with a cap hit of $9,500,000. The total value of all his contracts is $94,475,000.

Throughout his career. he has contributed 241 points in 391 regular games and 42 playoff points in 78 games played. Charlie McAvoy will be an unrestricted free agent after the completion of his tenure in 2029-2030.

Charlie McAvoy's NHL Journey

On March 29, 2017, Charlie McAvoy signed an amateur contract with the Providence Bruins, an AHL affiliate team of the Boston Bruins in the NHL. Shortly thereafter, he signed an entry-level NHL contract on April 10, 2017. He debuted in the NHL on April 12, 2017, and played his first game against the Ottawa Senators. Despite being a young player, he contributed three assists in six games.

His debut official NHL regular season began on October 5, 2017, against the Nashville Predators and made immediate impact with a goal and an assist, claiming victory. McAvoy continued his excellence and scored a Gordie Howe hat trick on December 18, 2017, against the Columbus Blue Jackets. He went through some health issues in early 2018 and underwent a supraventricular tachycardia procedure.

He returned to play on February 3, 2018. Charlie McAvoy solidified his presence and scored the winning overtime goal against the Carolina Hurricanes on February 27, 2018. He earned the NESN 7th Player Award for his performance. During the 2018-19 season, he faced an injury on October 18 and did not play till December 6. On his return, he faced another hurdle when he was hit by Zach Hyman. McAvoy was suspended for one playoff game on May 7, 2019, due to an illegal hit on Josh Anderson resulting in missing the Eastern Conference Final game 1. McAvoy signed an eight-year-long contract with the Boston Bruins in 2021 and continues to play with them.
