Ryan Murphy is a competitive swimmer from the United States. Murphy, the two-time Olympian formerly held the world record in the event of 100-meter backstroke (men's). He had a dream of representing the USA at the Olympics when he was seven years old. Murphy was a student at Bolles School in Jacksonville, Florida, and graduated from there in 2013. Later, he attends the University of California, Berkeley. Following his win in the 100-yard and 200-yard backstrokes event, Murphy became an NCAA individual national champion eight times in his career. He won the events in 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2017.

The 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics was the second participation of Ryan Murphy at the event. He clinched gold at the 4x100-meter medley relay and also set a world record at the event in addition. Murphy was named the silver medalist and bronze medalist in the 200-meter backstroke and the 100-meter backstroke event respectively.
