James van Riemsdyk is an American professional ice hockey left winger in the NHL. Often known by his initials JVR, he plays for the Columbus Blue Jackets as of October 2024. Born on May 4, 1989, in Middletown, New Jersey, van Riemsdyk developed his skills playing minor ice hockey locally. He then joined the USA Hockey National Team Development Program in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He was drafted second overall by the Philadelphia Flyers in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.

Van Riemsdyk continued playing ice hockey at the University of New Hampshire and joined the Flyers in 2009. Throughout his NHL career, Van Riemsdyk has played with multiple teams such as the Flyers, Toronto Maple Leafs, Boston Bruins, and now the Columbus Blue Jackets. He has achieved many milestones in his career such as scoring his 200th NHL goal and recording his 500th career NHL point.

James van Riemsdyk has two younger brothers who are also involved in professional ice hockey. His brother Trevor van Riemsdyk is a defenseman currently playing for the Washington Capitals in the NHL.

Their youngest brother Brendan van Riemsdyk also pursued a hockey career. Brendan played college hockey at the University of New Hampshire, following the footsteps of his older brother, and later transferred to Northeastern University. After completing his college career, Brendan signed a contract with the Reading Royals of the ECHL in August 2020.

His parents drove through the night with Allison from New Jersey to Minnesota to meet their new granddaughter. “They drove through the night, I think it took them like 19 hours, just a straight shot through pretty much, just stops for gas," van Riemsdyk said to NBC Sports to celebrate the arrival of their granddaughter.
