The Memphis Grizzlies selected Love with the fifth overall selection in the 2008 NBA Draft. On finale night, Love was moved to the Minnesota Timberwolves in exchange for O. J. Mayo, the third overall pick, as part of an eight-player deal.

Love was the Pac-10 Player of the Year while playing college hoops for the UCLA Bruins men's basketball squad. He played for the Cleveland Cavs, who reached four consecutive NBA Finals from 2015 to 2018 and claimed the NBA championship in 2016. He has been an NBA All-Star five times, and in 2011, when he dominated the league in rebounds, he was also awarded the league's Most Outstanding Player.
