Jack Johnson is an American ice hockey player who was drafted by the Carolina Hurricanes in the first round of the 2005 NHL Entry Draft from the Team USA under-18 national team. However, he did not immediately jump to the NHL, instead he played for the University of Michigan. Johnson set the school record for most rookie defenseman points (32) and penalty minutes (149) in his first season.
Instead of going back to Michigan to finish the semester after Michigan's defeat in the West Regional Semi-finals of the 2007 NCAA Tournament, Johnson signed an entry-level contract with the Los Angeles Kings in March 2007 and made his NHL debut on March 29 against the Vancouver Canucks. He played five games on the season, recording 18 penalty minutes and zero goals in 5 games. Johnson quickly became a regular in the Kings' lineup, and was named to the NHL All-Rookie Team in 2008. He helped the Kings reach the playoffs for the first time in six years in 2009, and he scored his first playoff goal in a series loss to the Vancouver Canucks.
Johnson was traded to the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2012, and he has played for several other teams since then, including the Pittsburgh Penguins, New York Rangers, and the Chicago Blackhawks. He joined the Colorado Avalanche in 2021 and won the Stanley Cup with them in 2022.
Jack Johnson’s parents
Jack Johnson's parents are Jack Johnson Sr. and Tina Johnson.
In 2008, Jack Johnson gave his parents control of his finances. This was a bad decision, as his parents mismanaged his money and he ended up losing a lot of money. In 2014, Jack filed for bankruptcy, claiming assets of "less than $50,000" and debts of "more than $10 million." Reports revealed that his mother had borrowed an astonishing $15 million against his future earnings, leaving his net worth at less than $50,000, while his debts exceed $10 million. They used the money for various expenses, including purchasing a beach house and cars, upgrading the Manhattan Beach property, and traveling to watch Johnson play NHL games. Johnson was unaware of some of these purchases and has been sued multiple times for defaulting on loans.
Johnson has since taken back control of his finances, and he is now working to rebuild his wealth.
