Taylor Hall's family moved to Kingston, Ontario, when he was 13 years old. He played minor league ice hockey with the North East Canucks in the 2004–05 season. He participated in Bantam and Minor midget hockey with the Greater Kingston Predators during the 2005–06 and 2006–07 seasons.


Taylor made his Ontario Hockey League debut with the Windsor Spitfires in 2007–08 and at the end of the season, he was named the OHL and CHL Rookie of the Year. Following the 2009 Memorial Cup, Taylor was also given the Stafford Smythe Memorial Trophy as the tournament's most valuable player.


Taylor's professional career in the National Hockey League began when he joined the Edmonton Oilers in 2010 and signed his first professional contract, which paid Taylor the maximum entry-level of $900,000.


Taylor made his official debut during the 2010–11 season with the Edmonton Oilers against the Calgary Flames. Taylor was traded to the New Jersey Devils in June 2016. Taylor became the first player in the team's history to win the Hart Memorial Trophy as the NHL's most valuable player in his second season with the Devils. He also led the Devils to the Stanley Cup Final in that season.


Taylor was traded to the Arizona Coyotes in December 2019 and had a disappointing season with the Coyotes. Taylor was traded to the Buffalo Sabres in October 2020. He couldn't make better contributions during the season with the Sabres, scoring only two goals and 19 points throughout the 37 regular season games.


Taylor was traded to the Boston Bruins in April 2021. He had a solid season with the Bruins, scoring 20 goals and adding 41 assists in 81 games. Taylor was again traded to the Chicago Blackhawks in June 2023.
