The NASCAR Xfinity Series is a second-tier series in stock car racing events run by NASCAR, ranking just below the Cup Series. It's a series to widen the frames for new upcoming drivers and welcome top veterans. The most important thing the Xfinity Series does is to help train and develop the next superstars of NASCAR. The series often runs a day before major Cup Series events and provides additional activity for fans during a Cup Series race weekend.
Formed in 1982, the series has undergone a few name changes, mostly due to changes in sponsorship. First known as the Budweiser Late Model Sportsman Series, then as the NASCAR Busch Grand National Series from the start of 1984 onwards, it also came to be called the NASCAR Nationwide Series between 2008 and 2014. Since 2015, Comcast's Xfinity brand has served as a series sponsor for the competition, cementing it as an even more leading stage of competition in motorsports.
The Xfinity Series has undergone several developments from its beginning days, from the specifications of cars to the format of races. NASCAR introduced a Chase system in 2016, similar to the playoff format of the Cup Series, as a way to bring in more action. Throughout the series’ history, the grid has changed in size, with changes for this COVID-19 pandemic-temporarily expanding the field with part-time teams.
