Coco Gauff (full name Cori Dionne Gauff) is a professional tennis player who represents the USA in the WTA tour. She is ranked No. 3 (as of November 2024) in the world in singles and No. 25 in the doubles category. She has won nine singles and nine doubles titles to date, which include winning the 2024 China Open, where she defeated Karolina Muchova in the finals. She was defeated by World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in the semifinal of the 2024 Wuhan Open.
Gauff also won the 2023 Miami Open doubles title with Jessica Pegula, defeating the team of Leylah Fernandez and Taylor Townsend in the final and becoming the first all-American duo to do so in 22 years. Gauff's career's first big achievement came in the first round of Wimbledon in 2019 when she defeated her role model, Venus Williams, in straight sets. Since then, she has achieved a lot of success and is currently one of the best players on the WTA tour.
Fast forward to 2023, she won her first Grand Slam title at the US Open, defeating Aryna Sabalenka in the final. After winning the US Open, she became the youngest American player to win the US Open since Serena Williams in 1999 (Serena Williams won her first of 23 major singles titles at age 17, at the US Open in 1999). She was also a finalist at the 2022 French Open and a semifinalist at the 2024 Australian Open. In the doubles category, she won her first Grand Slam title at the 2024 French Open with Katerina Siniakova, defeating the pair of Jasmine Paolini and Sara Errani.
Gauff idolizes Serena Williams and Venus Williams, and both have been the reasons for her starting her tennis career. She booked a spot in the semifinal of the 2024 WTA Finals with her win against Iga Swiatek and Jessica Pegula in the group stage. Gauff continued her impressive run by defeating World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in the semifinals and then overcame a set deficit to defeat Zheng in the final. This victory made her the youngest player to win the WTA Finals, one of the most prestigious tournaments, since Maria Sharapova in 2004.
The United States Olympic Committee selected her to be one of the flag bearers for the country, alongside LeBron James, at the opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics. She was eliminated in the third round by Donna Vekic.
