Alexandar Georgiev, born February 10, 1996, is a Bulgarian-born Russian professional ice hockey goaltender for the Colorado Avalanche in the National Hockey League (NHL). Born in Bulgaria, Georgiev began his hockey journey in Russia, where his family relocated shortly after his birth. Holding dual citizenship in both countries, he commenced his career with the Mascow-based Penguins before transferring to Khimik Voskresensk in Voskresensk, and later venturing to Finland. Georgiev debuted in the Liiga league while playing with TPS during the 2014-15 season.
Despite showcasing promise with two remarkable seasons with TPS, Georgiev remained undrafted in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft. Nonetheless, he received an invitation to participate in the New York Rangers’ development camp. His impressive performances secured him a three-year, entry-level contract with the Rangers on July 18, 2017. He finally made his NHL debut on February 22, 2018, registering 38 saves as the Rangers fell 3-1 to the Montreal Canadiens. Subsequently, on March 3, Georgiev made 35 saves to claim his inaugural NHL victory as the Rangers defeated the Edmonton Oilers 3-2.
On November 21,2018, Georgiev achieved his first NHL shutout, securing a 5-0 victory against the New York Islanders. Then on February 10, 2019, he set a career high with 55 saves in a remarkable 4-1 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs, earning the distinction of being the goaltender with the second-most saves in a single game in Rangers’ history. Additionally, he established a record for the most saves made in regulation.
He was traded to the Avalanche on July 7, 2022, after his negotiating rights were traded for third and fifth round picks in the 2022 NHL Entry Level Draft and lastly, a third-round pick in the 2023 NHL Entry Draft. Notably, Georgiev holds the distinction of being the first player born in Bulgaria to compete in the NHL.
