Cale Makar is the son of Gary and Laura Makar. He grew up with his younger brother Taylor Makar who is also pursuing a career in hockey, playing as a senior left wing for the University of Maine. Taylor acknowledges Cale’s incredible achievements, including winning the Hobey Baker Award, Calder Trophy, and Norris Trophy. Cale has been a significant role model for Taylor, offering guidance both on and off the ice. “We talk every day. He’s so mature. I’ve learned a lot of stuff from him,” Taylor shared in an interview with Bangor Daily News.

Gary and Laura raised Cale and his younger brother Taylor in a family that loved hockey. Interestingly, the Makars were lifelong fans of the Calgary Flames before Cale’s NHL debut. Despite their longtime loyalty to the Flames, they’ve fully embraced his career with the Colorado Avalanche. As Cale joked, his parents are now “fully Avs converted" in an interview with Dead Spin.

When Cale made his historic NHL debut during the playoffs against the Flames, it was an emotional moment for Gary and Laura Makar. Gary described the experience as “a total surreal, pinch-me moment all wrapped into one. It’s insane.” Their pride and excitement were noticeable as they watched their son succeed on hockey’s biggest stage. While Gary admitted that the family still owns plenty of Flames merchandise, their commitment now lies with Cale and the Avalanche.

Gary and Laura Makar were deeply involved in Cale's hockey journey. From the moment they brought him to Crowchild Twin Arena as a young child, their support was evident. Pat Laughton, the former general manager at Crowchild Twin Arena, recalled meeting the Makars when Cale was about four years old. Even then, Laughton said to Laura, “This kid is going to be a hockey player" as per the Denver Post.
