Cale Douglas Makar is an ice hockey professional defenceman, playing with the Colorado Avalanche in the National Hockey League (NHL), as of January 2025. His professional hockey career started with the Colorado Avalanche in the 2017 NHL Entry draft.

Makar played two seasons with the UMass Minutemen in the NCAA before his selection in the NHL. He made his NHL debut in the 2019-2020 season, earning the prestigious Calder Memorial Trophy as the Rookie of the Year. During the 2020-21 NHL season, Makar was also nominated for the James Norris Memorial Trophy, an award that is given to the NHL's best defenseman. He was awarded the Norris Trophy for the 2021-2022 season. During the 2022 Stanley Cup Playoffs, Makar helped the Colorado Avalanche to the Stanley Cup victory, earning him the Conn Smythe Trophy for being the MVP of his team during the playoffs.

According to his college profile, Makar was drafted in the seventh round, 220th overall, by the Colorado Avalanche in the 2021 NHL Draft. Although his NHL rights are held by the Avalanche, he remains unsigned.

According to Elite Prospects, during his junior career, Makar played with the NWCAA Bronks, Calgary Flames U15 AAA, NWCAA Stampeders, and Brooks Bandits in the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL). In college hockey, he started at the University of Massachusetts (UMass) and later transferred to the University of Maine, where he plays, as of 2025.
