Hailing from Boston, Massachusetts, Jimmy Vesey excelled in the Eastern Junior Hockey League with South Shore in the 2011-12 season, where he set records with 48 goals and 91 points in 45 games. This performance led to his selection by the Nashville Predators in the third round of the 2012 NHL Draft. However, he chose to attend college and play for Harvard Crimson men's ice hockey team, where he earned multiple ECAC honors and the Hobey Baker Award for his performances.

Despite his collegiate success, Vesey chose not to sign with the Predators and intended to become a unrestricted free agent and later signed with the New York Rangers in August 2016.
