After his fourth season with the Chiefs, Johnson was signed by the Tampa Bay Lightning as an undrafted free agent. Johnson spent the next two seasons in the American Hockey League (AHL) with the Lightning's affiliate, the Norfolk Admirals. He was a dominant force in the AHL, scoring 75 goals in 137 games.
Johnson was recalled to the Lightning in the 2012-13 season and quickly established himself as a regular in the lineup. He played in 14 games and scored 3 goals. Johnson continued to be a key player for the Lightning in the following seasons. Tyler Johnson won two Stanley Cups, both with the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2020 and 2021 respectively.
