The Melbourne Stars secured a thrilling two-ball victory over the Melbourne Renegades, chasing down 169 runs in a nail-biting contest with two balls to spare. After winning the toss, the Stars invited the Renegades to bat first, looking to exploit the favorable bowling conditions.
The Renegades struggled initially against the Stars' pace duo of Joel Paris and Mark Steketee. Josh Brown and Jake Fraser-McGurk opened the batting, but their innings were marked by a cautious start. The duo struggled to negotiate the short-pitched deliveries of Paris and Steketee, and Brown eventually fell prey to Paris's precision. The Renegades' powerplay woes continued, with Fraser-McGurk departing after playing some impressive sixes. By the end of the powerplay, the Renegades were reeling at 21-2. At the 10-over mark, the Renegades were 63-3, with Tim Siefert and Jacob Bethell attempting to stabilize the innings. However, Siefert's dismissal just before drinks halted their momentum.
Bethell continued to anchor the innings, playing a crucial 49-run knock that included some innovative strokeplay. Jonathan Wells provided valuable support, helping the Renegades amass 28 runs during the Power Surge (overs 14-16). The Renegades ultimately posted 168 runs in their allotted 20 overs. Joel Paris and Peter Siddle were the standout bowlers for the Stars, claiming two wickets each.
In response, the Stars' chase got off to a disastrous start, losing Thomas Rogers and Sam Harper within the first two overs. Gurinder Sandhu's pace and accuracy proved too much for the Stars' top order, leaving them reeling at 3-2.
However, Ben Duckett and Marcus Stoinis revived the innings, striking hard and playing unorthodox shots. The Stars reached 81-3 at the 10-over mark, with Duckett and Stoinis leading the charge. Despite losing wickets the Stars' middle order refused to give up. Glenn Maxwell and Hilton Cartwright's late onslaught proved decisive, as the Stars chased down the target with two balls to spare. Maxwell and Cartwright played some astonishing shots all around the park, taking advantage of the Renegades' wayward bowling. Cartwright's boundary off the penultimate ball sealed the win, sparking wild celebrations among the Stars' players.
The Stars' victory earned them two valuable points on the table, propelling them two in two wins. The Renegades, despite their valiant efforts, were left to ponder what might have been.
