Matthew Tkachuk was ranked as the second-best North American skater leading up to the 2016 NHL Draft. The Calgary Flames selected Tkachuk with the sixth overall pick, and he became one of the team's top players. In his rookie season, he scored 13 goals and 48 points in 76 games. He continued to improve in his second season, scoring 24 goals and 49 points in 68 games. Tkachuk was named an alternate captain for the Flames before the 2018-19 season. He continued to improve, setting new career highs in points and becoming the first player from his draft class to reach 100 career assists.
