Evgeni Vladimirovich Malkin is a Russian ice hockey center currently serving as an alternate captain for the Pittsburgh Penguins in the National Hockey League. He is also known as “Geno”. Malkin started skating at the age of three and developed an interest in ice hockey. Malkin initially started his hockey career in his hometown Magnitogorsk, Russia with Metallurg Magnitogorsk, participating in both junior and senior teams and debuted in the Russian Superleague when he was 17 during the 2003-2004. He was selected second overall in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft by the Pittsburgh Penguins.

In his debut season in the NHL, Malkin won the Calder Memorial Trophy as the NHL's best rookie. In 2008, he led the Penguins to the Stanley Cup finals, also securing a nomination for the Hart Memorial Trophy. Malkin won the Art Ross Trophy in 2009 for leading the NHL in points and the same year contributed to the Penguin's Stanley Cup victory where he was honored with the Conn Smythe Trophy as the MVP of the playoffs. In 2012, Malkin won the Art Ross Trophy for the second time, the HartMemorial Trophy and the Ted Lindsay Award.

The 37-year-old Russian is set to earn a salary of $6,000,000 and a cap hit of $6,100,000 for the 2023-24 NHL season. He is currently under a four-year contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins for $24,400,000, with a cap hit of $6,100,000. Malkin was selected by the Penguins as the 2nd overall pick, in the first round of the 2004 NHL Entry draft. He has signed four contracts in his NHL career and the value of all his contracts is $155,402,600.

In his 18-season career, Malkin has collected an impressive score of 1247 points in 1080 regular-season games and 180 playoff points in 177 games played. He will be an unrestricted free agent after the 2025-2026 season.

Evgeni Malkin NHL Journey

He was drafted by the Penguins in the 2004 NHL Entry draft but his debut was delayed due to NHL and IIHF dispute. Malkin finally made his debut in the 2006-2007 season. He made an immediate impact and scored a goal each in his first six games, setting a modern NHL record. He finished his rookie season with 85 points, securing a nomination for Calder Memorial Trophy. In his sophomore season 2007-2008, he continued his impact with 106 points and scored his first NHL hat trick. In the Stanley Cup playoffs, Malkin scored 22 points but the Penguins lost against the Detroit Red Wings in the finals.

The following season, he scored a career-high 113 points. Malkin also played a crucial role in the 2009 Stanley Cup championship, winning the Conn Smythe Trophy for the Most Valuable Player in the playoffs with 36 points. In 2010-2011, Malkin suffered a knee injury but bounced back in the following season, winning the Hart Memorial Trophy for the first time in his career. However, the Penguins were eliminated in the first round of playoffs. Malkin helped the Penguins in winning back-to-back Stanley Cups in 2016 and 2017, he contributed 28 points during the 2017 Stanley Cup playoffs.

In March 2019, Malkin reached the milestone of 1,000 NHL points and became just the 88th player in the league to have achieved such a milestone. Malkin signed a four-year extension contract with the Penguins and continues to showcase his skills. Malkin has been a key player for the Penguins ever since his debut.
